Heavenly Hydrangeas

“A dead hydrangea is as intricate and lovely as one in bloom.”

-Toni Morrison, Tar Baby (1981)

The colors of the blossoms are what really make the hydrangea stand out (depending on the acidity of the soil). From pink, white and green, to blue, the hydrangea’s hues include almost every shade of lavender and violet to deep purple. The pale pastel baby blues and calm lavenders contrasted with vibrant and vivid shades of violet are a feast for the eyes. Pink hydrangea blossoms range from the color of a pale ballerina tutu to an intense fuchsia.

This makes the hydrangea bush the perfect companion to any lawn. The large, showy blossoms are a gorgeous spectacle in the summer when in full bloom and make any home and yard look like an Impressionist painting.
“Blooming in spring and summer, the hydrangea is considered a shrub.” According to the experts, hydrangea bushes are actually rather simple to plant and tend. These showstoppers are very large and can reach up to 15 feet in height! The hydrangea grows quickly and can fill a large space in just one summer.

First discovered in Japan, the name hydrangea comes from the Greek “hydor,” meaning water, and “angos,” meaning jar or vessel. The rough translation is “water barrel,” which is fitting because hydrangeas need lots of water to thrive and flourish. Their blossoms also sort of resemble a round cup.
Hydrangeas are popularly used as the 4th wedding anniversary flower as they represent grace, beauty, heartfelt and honest emotions as well as gratitude.
